Congenital Protein Hypersensitiveness in Two Generations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hypersensitivity actively induced in utero is shown to persist for a longer period than passive sensitization. The degree of hypersensitivity, its duration, and its transmissibility appear to be influenced by the time elapsing between the original injection of the parent and parturition. A pregnant guinea pig receiving a parenteral injection of antigen 2 to 4 days prior to parturition transmits a state of hypersensitivity to two succeeding generations. The sensitization of the F(I) generation is due to the passage of antigen. The sensitization of the F(II) generation is due to the passage of antibodies formed in the F(I) generation. This prevents any further transfer of the hypersensitive state. Though hypersensitivity occurs in two successive generations, the phenomenon is congenital and not hereditary. We believe that this phenomenon demonstrated in the guinea pig is fundamentally related to the problem of congenital sensitization of the human being.

Phenomenon of Local Skin Reactivity to Bacterial Filtrates in Its Relation to Bacterial Hypersensitiveness
The observations reported in this paper demonstrate that the intravascular interaction of bacterial and animal protein antigens with homologous antibodies at the site of a tissue made vulnerable by bacterial filtrates induces prompt severe hemorrhagic necrosis in this tissue. In the light of these observations there is offered an explanation of the mechanism underlying focal and skin bacterial ...
متن کاملStudies on the Tuberculin Reaction and on Specific Hypersensitiveness in Bacterial Infection
The work reported in the preceding sections justifies, we think, a number of definite conclusions. In addition to this, some of the experiments indicate a line of thought which may lead to considerable alteration in our conceptions, both of phenomena of bacterial hypersensitiveness and of infection. 1. In guinea pigs two fundamentally different types of intradermal reactions may be observed. On...
متن کاملTuberculin Hypersensitiveness in Non-tuberculous Guinea Pigs Induced by Injections of Bacillus-free Filtrates
1. When a guinea pig with well developed peritoneal tuberculosis is injected intraperitoneally with about 20 cc. of a heavy suspension of a virulent tubercle bacillus (Culture H37) death occurs within 24 hours or the animal becomes extremely toxic. Such a peritoneal tuberculosis develops in about 1 month after 1 cc. of. a very heavy suspension of Culture H37 has been introduced into the abdomin...
متن کاملSTUDIES ON HYPERSENSITIVENESS TO DIPHTHERIA BACILLI. I. AN "I~m~mAT~." SxrN REACTION WHICH CAN BE PASSIVELY TRANSFERRED
Hypersensitiveness of man to bacteria is of general importance because of its unknown effects upon infection and resistance and upon the manifestation of disease. From at least one aspect, hypersensitiveness to diphtheria bacilli seems to be especially important. While there are few diseases in which the manifestations can be referred so directly to the toxin, there are few pathogenic bacteria ...
متن کاملReactions of Normal and Tuberculous Animals to Tuberculo-protein and Tuberculo-phosphatide
Prior observations on the cellular reactions to tuberculo-phosphatide are confirmed and compared with reactions induced by this material in tuberculous animals. In the latter the response is accelerated and augmented and simulates the Koch phenomenon. Tuberculo-protein produces no macroscopic reaction in normal animals. The microscopic reaction of neutrophiles and monocytes regresses in less th...
